நாகப்பட்டினம் மாவட்டத்தின் தென் கோடியில் கிழக்கு கடற்கரை சாலைக்கும் வேதாரண்யம்-நாகப்பட்டினம் உப்பாறுக்கு இடையே சுமார் 23 கிலோ மீட்டர் சுற்றளவைக் கொண்டது. வேதாரண்யம் (திருமறைகாடு)நகர பஞ்சாயத்தை சார்ந்த ஊராகும். இங்கு 90 விழுக்காட்டினர் முஸ்லிம்கள் ஆகும், மாற்று மதத்தினர்கள் பெரும் பகுதி இதை சுற்றிவுள்ள கிராமங்களில் வாழ்கிறார்கள். முஸ்லிம்-இந்துகள் மற்றும் இதர இனத்தவர்களிம் பரஸ்பரம் உறவுகள் பாராட்டி வாழ்ந்து வருவாதல் இது சமய ஒற்றுமைக்கு எடுத்துக்காட்டான இந்த ஊர் திகழ்கிறது.

தோப்புத்துறை, கடற்கரையை ஓட்டிய கிராமம். தோப்புத்துறை என்ற பெயரே இந்த ஊரின் அர்த்த விளக்கத்தை அளிக்கும் தோப்புகளுடன் துறைமுகமும் உள்ளது என்ற செய்தியை தருகிறது. இந்த கிராமத்திலிருந்து உப்பாறு நான்கு கிலோ மீட்டர் தொலைவு சென்று கடலில் கலக்கிறது. எனவே அக்கால மக்கள் பொருள்களை படகுகளில் ஏற்றி சென்று மரக்கலங்களில் ஏற்றினர். மரக்கல உரிமையாளர்கள் சரக்குகளைக் கொண்டு சென்று மலேசியா,இலங்கை, இந்தோனீசிஸா மற்ற தென் கிழக்காசியா நாடுகளுடன் மரக்கலங்களில் வர்த்தகம் செய்தனர் இவர்களை வணிக aIதியாக மரக்கலராயர் என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டார்கள் பின்னர் வழங்கில் தற்போது மரைக்காயர் என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறது. மேலும் இவர்கள் கொண்டு வரும் பண்ட மாற்றுப் பொருள்களை வாங்கி தரைவழி வர்த்தகர்கள் மற்ற பகுதிகளுக்கு எடுத்து சென்று விற்பனை செய்வார்கள். இவர்கள் இரவில் குதிரைகளின் மூலம் எடுத்து சென்று பகலில் சந்தையில் விற்பார்கள். இவர்களை இரவு தத்தர்கள் என்ற அழைக்கப்பட்டு நாளடைவில் பேச்சி வழக்கில் இராவுத்தர்கள் என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறார்கள். இது இந்த பெயர்கள் தொழில்விதத்தில் அழைக்கப்பட்ட பிரிவு பெயர்கள் இது சாதியில்ல. இது தற்போது அதிகமாக பேசப்படுவது இfல்லை. அக்கால மக்கள் தொழில்கள் பல செய்து வந்துள்ளார்கள் தற்போது சிலர் மட்டுமே வணிகர்களாகவும், ஒரு குறிப்பிட்டளவு விவசாயிகளாவும், பெரும் பகுதினர் வெளிநாட்டில் பணிநிமித்தமாக உள்ளார்கள்.

Here Muslims, Hindus and other religious people live together and this place can be sited as an example of unity among people of different community.

Thopputhurai is a village near seashore. The name gives that this place has lot of plantation and harbor. From this village a salt lake mixes with the after running a distance of 4 k.m. So in the early days people use to trade using catamarans to board their goods in to steamers whereby they trade with Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and other South East Asian countries. The people stared calling them MARAKALAYAR and now they are called as MARAIKAYAR. They started trading with the goods exchanged by way of barter system. This people take the goods in night by horseback and trade them in the markets in the daytime. This people are called TATHARKAL as the days passed they are now called as IRAVUTHURKAL. This name doesn't relate to a religion they are called so because of their trade. They are no longer called by that name now. Only few are now doing business, some has become agriculturist and majority people are working in foreign countries.

People living in Singapore stated this sangam for the welfare of people in Thopputhurai and for the unity among people in 1948 and all this days it has done some good deeds to the people their.

People residing in U.A.E. formed a sangam in 1977 with Dubai as Head quarter and started making action plans for the place. The future action plan of this sangam is it has marked the importance of providing education to Women. So the Sangam started checking out action plans for imparting Islamic studies to Women. With this plans women will get Islamic studies through Arabic & Tamil and other professional studies. A community library is already installed. This sangam offers money as an aid to poor during their marriage.

Like above sangam branches has a small establishment as Saudi Arabia, Malaysia etc.

தமிழகத்தில் முஸ்லிம்கள் நிறைந்து வாழக்கூடிய ஊர்களில் தோப்புத்துறையும் ஒன்று. நாகப்பட்டினம் மாவட்டத்தில் கிழக்கு கடற்க்கரையோரத்தில் இயற்கை எழில் சூழ அமைந்திருக்கிறது தோப்புத்துறை. வேளாங்கண்ணியிலிருந்து 35 கிலோமீட்டர் தூரத்தில் வேதாரண்யத்திலிருந்து முன்று கிலோமீட்டருக்கு முன் வங்க கடலிருந்து இரண்டு கிலோமீட்டர் மேற்கே அமைத்திருக்கும் தோப்புத்துறையில் முஸ்லீம்களோடு இந்துக்களும், தலித்துகளும் ஒற்றுமையோடு வாழ்ந்து வருவது இவ்வூரின் பெருமைகளில் ஒன்றாகும். தென்னை, மா, முந்திரி, சவுக்கு, பனை என தோப்புகள் நிறைந்திருப்பது ஊரின் பெயருக்கேற்ற சிறப்பாகும். தோப்புத்துறையை சுற்றியிருக்கும் தேத்தாகுடி, பெரியகுத்தகை, புஷ்பவனம் போன்ற கிராமங்கள் தோப்புத்துறையின் இயற்கை அழகுக்கு அழகு சேர்ப்பவை. இப்பகுதிகள் யாழ்ப்பாணத்தை நினைவுபடுத்தும் வகையில் இருக்கும். நேரான வீதிகள், அழகான வீடுகள், சுவையான நிலத்தடி நீர், சுகாதாரமான சூழல் ஆகியன தோப்புத்துறையின் எழிலுக்கு எழில் சேர்ப்பவை. நாகப்பட்டினம், திருத்துறைப்பூண்டி, முத்துபேட்டை போன்ற ஊர்களின் வழியாக தோப்புத்துறைக்கு வருகை தரமுடியும். தோப்புத்துறைக்குள் நுழையும்போதே பசுமைபோர்த்திய மரங்கள் அடர்ந்த இயற்கை சுழலை காணமுடியும். இது கடல்சார்ந்த பகுதி என்பதால் ஒரு நெய்தல் நிலமாக இருக்கிறது.

இஸ்லாத்தின் வருகை: சோழ மன்னர்களின் ஆட்சிக்கு முன்பே இஸ்லாம இவ்வூருக்கு அறிமுகமாகியிருக்கிறது. தோப்புத்துறையில் புகழ்பெற்ற துறைமுகம் ஒன்று இயங்கியிருக்கிறது. அதுவே இம்மண்னுக்கு இஸ்லாத்தையும் இறக்குமதி செய்திருக்கிறது! இஸ்லாம் அராபிய வணிகர்களின் வழியாக கேரள கடற்கரையோர பகுதிகளுக்கு அறிமுகமானது. இஸ்லாத்தை முதலில் தழுவியவர்கள் தென்னிந்தியர்கள்தான். கலீபாக்களின் ஆட்சிக் காலத்தில் பல இஸ்லாமிய பிரச்சாரர்களும், அரபு வணிகர்களும் தமிழக கடற்கரை பகுதிகளுக்கு வருகை தந்தார்கள். இஸ்லாமிய பிரச்சாரர்களின் கண்ணியமான அணுகுமுறைகளலும், அரபு வணிகர்களின் நேர்மையாலும் இம்மக்கள் கவரப்பட்டார்கள். அதன் வழியாக அருகாமை ஊர்களான காரைக்கால், நாகூர், நாகப்பட்டினம், முத்துபேட்டை, அதிராம்பட்டினம் போன்ற பகுதிகளில் மக்கள் இஸ்லாத்தை தழுவினார்கள் இதே காலகட்டத்தில்தான் கீழக்கரை, காயல்பட்டினம் போன்ற பகுதிகளும் இஸ்லாம் தழுவியது. தோப்புத்துறையில் பிள்ளைமார் சமுதாய மக்கள் நிறைந்து வாழ்ந்த நிலையில், பல்வேறு சமுதாயங்களை சேர்ந்த இவ்வூர் மக்களும் இஸ்லாத்தை ஏற்றிருக்கிறார்கள். கலீபா அபூபக்கர் (ரலி) காலத்திலிருந்தே இங்கு வருகை தந்த அரபு வணிகர்களுடன் திருமண தொடர்புகளும் நிகழ்ந்ததாக சொல்லபடுகிறது.பல இஸ்லாமிய பிரச்சாரர்கள் இங்கு வருகை தந்து இம்மண்ணிலேயே மரணித்தார்கள். மக்கள் அவர்களை இறைநேசர்கள் என போற்றினர்.

தோப்புத்துரையின் சிறப்புகள்: தோப்புதுரையின் பழைய பெயர் சேதுமாதவபுரமாகும். பொதுவாக இங்கிருந்து கீழக்கரை வரை நீண்டுக் கிடக்கும் கடற்கரை பகுதிக்கு ‘சேது’ என்ற பெயர் இயல்பான அறிமுகமாகும். சேது சமுத்திரத்திட்டம் தோப்புதுறைக்கு அருகிலிருக்கும் கோடியக்கரையிலிருந்துதான் தொடங்குகிறது என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. தோப்புதுறைக்கு அருகிலிருக்கும் முக்கிய ஊர் வேதாரண்யமாகும். தோப்புத்துறையிலிருந்து இருபது கிலோமீட்டர் தூரத்தில் சுற்றுலாத்தலமான கோடியக்கரை காடுகள் உள்ளது. இதன்கடற்பகுதியில் தான் பாக் நீதரிணை உள்ளது. இப்பகுதி இந்திய வரைபடத்தில் point calimare என்று குறிப்பிடப்படுகிறது . இந்தியாவில் குஜராத்துக்கு அடுத்து இங்குதான் கடலோர காடுகள் உள்ளது. இங்கு மான்கள், காட்டுக்குதிரைகள்,நரிகள், ஓநாய்கள் போன்ற விலங்கினங்கள் வாழ்கின்றன. இங்கு ஒரு பறவைகள் சரணாலயமும் உண்டு. நவம்பர், டிசம்பர், மாதங்களில் வெளிநாட்டு பறவைகள் இங்கு வருகை தருகின்றன. தோப்புதுறைக்கு அருகில் கோடியக்கரை, கரியாப்பட்டினம், சரவக்கட்டளை, நாலுவேதபதி, புஷ்பவனம், தலைஞாயிறு, தாதன்திருவாசல், துளசியாபட்டினம் போன்ற ஊர்களில் முஸ்லிம்கள் வாழ்கிறார்கள். சற்று தூரத்தில் நாகூர், நாகப்பட்டினம், முத்துபேட்டை, அதிராம்பட்டினம், திருப்பூண்டி, கட்டிமேடு, நாச்சிக்குளம் போன்ற முஸ்லிம்கள் வாழும் ஊர்கள் உள்ளன. இப்பகுதிகளோடு தோப்புதுறைவாசிகள் திருமணத் தொடர்புகள் கொண்டுள்ளனர். பிற சமுதாய உறவுகள்: தோப்புத்துறையில் பிள்ளைமார் சமுதாயத்தை சேர்ந்த இந்துக்கள் கணிசமாக வாழ்கிறார்கள். தலித்துகள் ஒரு பகுதியில் வாழ்கிறார்கள். சுற்றிலும் உள்ள ஊர்களில் தெற்கே தேவர்கள், வடக்கே வன்னியர்கள், மேற்கே யாதவர்கள், வட கிழக்கே நாயுடுகள், கிழக்கே மீனவர்கள், என பல்வேறு சமுதாய மக்களும் வாழ்கிறார்கள். அவர்கள் வழிபடும் ஏராளமான கோயில்கள் உள்ளன. முஸ்லிம்கள் இம்மக்களோடு மிகுந்த தோழமையோடு வாழ்கிறார்கள். திருமணம், புதுமனை புகுவிழா, விருந்துகள் என அனைத்திலும் ஒருவருக்குகொருவர் பங்கேற்று சமுக நல்லிணக்கத்தோடு வாழ்கிறார்கள்.

அயலகத் தொடர்பு: கூப்பிடும் தூரத்தில் இலங்கை தீவு அமைந்துள்ளது. நவீன இயந்திரபடகின் மூலம் ½ மணி நேரத்தில் இலங்கைக்கு சென்றுவிடலாம். அக்காலத்தில் இலங்கைக்கு சென்று இவ்வூர்மக்கள் பெரும் வியாபாரிகளாக திகழ்ந்துள்ளர்கள். யாழ்ப்பாணம், கொழும்பு என இவர்களது பயணம் அமைந்திருக்கிறது. 1930 க்கு பிறகு சிங்கப்பூர் மலேசியாவை நோக்கி பலர் புறப்பட்டார்கள் கடின உழைப்பாளிகலான இவர்கள் விரைவிலேயே செல்வந்தர்கள் ஆனார்கள். பல பெரிய மாடிவீடுகள் உருவாகின.1980க்கு பிறகு பலர் தங்கள் குடும்பத்தினரை அங்கு அழைத்துச்சென்றனர் அதன் விளைவாக இன்று 200க்கும் மேற்பட்ட தோப்புத்துறை குடும்பங்கள் சிங்கப்பூரில் வசிக்கின்றன. அங்கு தோப்புத்துறை முஸ்லிம் சங்கமும் செயல்படுகிறது. சிங்கப்பூர் அரசினால் அங்கீகரிக்கப்பட்ட 14 சங்கங்களில் இதுவும் ஒன்று. அங்கு உணவகம், மளிகை, கண்ணாடி உள்ளிட்ட துறைகளில் சிறந்த வணிகர்களாக திகழ்கிறார்கள். 1980கள் வரை நாகப்பட்டினம் துறைமுகம் வழியாக பினாங்கு மற்றும் சிங்கப்பூருக்கு கப்பல் வழிப்பயணம் தான் இவர்களுக்கு பயண்பட்டிருக்கிறது சிங்கையின் அரசுபணிகளிளும், தனியார் நிறுவனங்களிலும் திறன்மிகு ஊழியர்களாக தோப்புத்துறைவாசிகள் திகழ்கிறார்கள். மலேசியாவிலும் தோப்புத்துறையை சேர்ந்தவர்கள் பலதுறைகளிலும் பங்களிப்பு செய்கிறார்கள். 1980 களுக்கு பிற்கு அரபுநாடுகளை நோக்கி புதிய தலைமுறை சென்றது. அது இப்போதும் தொடர்கிறது. குறிப்பாக ஐக்கிய அரபு அமீரகத்தில் தான் பெரும்பாலோர் வசிக்கிறார்கள். அங்கும் சிறந்த வணிகர்களாகவும், தொழிலாளர்களாகவும் அரசு மற்றும் தனியார் நிறுவன அதிகாரிகளகவும், ஊழியர்களாகவும் உள்ளனர். சிலர் சாதாரண பணியாளர்களாகவும் உள்ளனர். இங்கு தோப்புத்துறை-துபை முஸ்லிம் சங்கம் செயல்படுகிறது. சவுதி, கத்தார், குவைத், பஹ்ரைன், ஓமன் உள்ளிட்ட பிற நாடுகளிலும் கணிசமானோர் வசிக்கிறார்கள் எதிர்காலத்தில் அமெரிக்கா, இங்கிலாந்து, ஆஸ்திரேலிய என பயணங்கள் மாறும் சூழலும் உள்ளது.

தமிழக கிழக்கு கடற்கரையோரத்தில் இருக்கும் ஊர்களில் தோப்புத்துறை ஒரு பழைமையான துறைமுக நகரமாகும். பலதரப்பட்ட உள்நாட்டு வணிகம் மற்றும் ஏற்றுமதி, இறக்குமதி வணிபம் பெரிய அளவில் நடைப்பெற்ற தொன்மைமிக்க ஊர், கடலும் அதை சார்ந்த இடமும் இருப்பதால் சங்க கால தமிழர்கள் வழக்கப்படி தோப்புத்துறை நெய்தல் நிலம் என்று வகைப்படுத்தப்பட்டது.

விஜய ரகுநாத சோக்கலிங்கர் ஆட்சி காலத்தில் தோப்புத்துறை பகுதி அவர்களின் ஆட்சியின் கீழ் செயல்பட்ட காரணத்தால் வேதாரண்யம்-திருமறைகாடு சுற்றியுள்ள பல சாலைகளுக்கும், ஊர்களுக்கும், வழிபாடு தளங்களுக்கும் அவர்கள் ஆட்சிபகுதியில் இருந்த சமுத்திரத்திற்கு சேது என்ற பெயர் சேர்த்து அழைக்கப்பட்டது. தோப்புத்துறைக்கு சேதுமாதவபுரம் என்ற பெயரும் இருந்தாக சொல்லப்படுகிறது.
