தோப்புத்துறை.

நாகப்பட்டினம் மாவட்டத்தின் தென் கோடியில் கிழக்கு கடற்கரை சாலைக்கும் வேதாரண்யம்-நாகப்பட்டினம் உப்பாறுக்கு இடையே சுமார் 23 கிலோ மீட்டர் சுற்றளவைக் கொண்டது. வேதாரண்யம் (திருமறைகாடு)நகர பஞ்சாயத்தை சார்ந்த ஊராகும். இங்கு 90 விழுக்காட்டினர் முஸ்லிம்கள் ஆகும், மாற்று மதத்தினர்கள் பெரும் பகுதி இதை சுற்றிவுள்ள கிராமங்களில் வாழ்கிறார்கள். முஸ்லிம்-இந்துகள் மற்றும் இதர இனத்தவர்களிம் பரஸ்பரம் உறவுகள் பாராட்டி வாழ்ந்து வருவாதல் இது சமய ஒற்றுமைக்கு எடுத்துக்காட்டான இந்த ஊர் திகழ்கிறது.

தோப்புத்துறை, கடற்கரையை ஓட்டிய கிராமம். தோப்புத்துறை என்ற பெயரே இந்த ஊரின் அர்த்த விளக்கத்தை அளிக்கும் தோப்புகளுடன் துறைமுகமும் உள்ளது என்ற செய்தியை தருகிறது. இந்த கிராமத்திலிருந்து உப்பாறு நான்கு கிலோ மீட்டர் தொலைவு சென்று கடலில் கலக்கிறது. எனவே அக்கால மக்கள் பொருள்களை படகுகளில் ஏற்றி சென்று மரக்கலங்களில் ஏற்றினர். மரக்கல உரிமையாளர்கள் சரக்குகளைக் கொண்டு சென்று மலேசியா,இலங்கை, இந்தோனீசிஸா மற்ற தென் கிழக்காசியா நாடுகளுடன் மரக்கலங்களில் வர்த்தகம் செய்தனர் இவர்களை வணிக aIதியாக மரக்கலராயர் என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டார்கள் பின்னர் வழங்கில் தற்போது மரைக்காயர் என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறது. மேலும் இவர்கள் கொண்டு வரும் பண்ட மாற்றுப் பொருள்களை வாங்கி தரைவழி வர்த்தகர்கள் மற்ற பகுதிகளுக்கு எடுத்து சென்று விற்பனை செய்வார்கள். இவர்கள் இரவில் குதிரைகளின் மூலம் எடுத்து சென்று பகலில் சந்தையில் விற்பார்கள். இவர்களை இரவு தத்தர்கள் என்ற அழைக்கப்பட்டு நாளடைவில் பேச்சி வழக்கில் இராவுத்தர்கள் என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறார்கள். இது இந்த பெயர்கள் தொழில்விதத்தில் அழைக்கப்பட்ட பிரிவு பெயர்கள் இது சாதியில்ல. இது தற்போது அதிகமாக பேசப்படுவது இfல்லை. அக்கால மக்கள் தொழில்கள் பல செய்து வந்துள்ளார்கள் தற்போது சிலர் மட்டுமே வணிகர்களாகவும், ஒரு குறிப்பிட்டளவு விவசாயிகளாவும், பெரும் பகுதினர் வெளிநாட்டில் பணிநிமித்தமாக உள்ளார்கள்.

This place is at the South end of Nagapattinam Dist. and between the East Coast road of Vedaranyam-Nagapattinam around 23 k.m. Radius. Vedaranyam (Thirumaraikadu) town falls under Panchayat. Of the people 90% are Muslims and people of other religion live in near by villages around this place. Here Muslims, Hindus and other religious people live together and this place can be sited as an example of unity among people of different community.

Thopputhurai is a village near seashore. The name gives that this place has lot of plantation and harbor. From this village a salt lake mixes with the after running a distance of 4 k.m. So in the early days people use to trade using catamarans to board their goods in to steamers whereby they trade with Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and other South East Asian countries. The people stared calling them MARAKALAYAR and now they are called as MARAIKAYAR. They started trading with the goods exchanged by way of barter system. This people take the goods in night by horseback and trade them in the markets in the daytime. This people are called TATHARKAL as the days passed they are now called as IRAVUTHURKAL. This name doesn't relate to a religion they are called so because of their trade. They are no longer called by that name now. Only few are now doing business, some has become agriculturist and majority people are working in foreign countries.

Thopputhurai Muslim Sangam

People living in Singapore stated this sangam for the welfare of people in Thopputhurai and for the unity among people in 1948 and all this days it has done some good deeds to the people their.

People residing in U.A.E. formed a sangam in 1977 with Dubai as Head quarter and started making action plans for the place. The future action plan of this sangam is it has marked the importance of providing education to Women. So the Sangam started checking out action plans for imparting Islamic studies to Women. With this plans women will get Islamic studies through Arabic & Tamil and other professional studies. A community library is already installed. This sangam offers money as an aid to poor during their marriage.

Like above sangam branches has a small establishment as Saudi Arabia, Malaysia etc.

The modern world Thopputhurai 90% of the house has telephone connection. Indian telecom has now plans of providing Internet Services.

The Thopputhurai People getting medical assistants are available in Vedaranyam. Near by districts like Nagapattinam, Tanjore are getting this facility.

In Thopputhurai Muslims have many Mosques. One of the Grand Mosques is a century old. Hindus has built their temple for praying.
